Telling the Story
The reading should be done prior to the study so every member should have the opportunity to read the material. Ask one person to be responsible for telling the story when you meet. This doesn't have to be a word for word re-telling. This is a person's re-telling of the story using the summary notes from their own personal study. As the person re-tells the story he can mention some of the results of his study connecting his belief statements back to the story. Telling the story is an easy way to give an overview of the passage and trains people how to share bible/gospel stories that connect to people in modern contexts.
Process:(The Breakdown)
1. Pray: Thank God for giving you His Word and ask Him to meet you as you spend time in the Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you so that you understand the Word and to empower you to respond to what God reveals.
2. Read: Look through the whole passage to try and get a complete picture of what the text is saying. Read back through the text to look for details that will help clarify the big picture.
3. Summarize: Do your best to summarize what you read in bullet format. Write the verse references next to the bullet points you're summarizing.
4. Analyze: Write down questions you would ask someone to help them summarize the text. Then ask questions that will help you understand what the text meant to it's original author and audience. Finally ask questions that will help a person understand what timeless truths are applicable to today.
5. Contextualize: Distill the results of your study into true belief statements that declare what God has revealed about Himself, us and how He interacts with us. The shorter and more focused the statement the better. This is where you answer the question "What is the point of all this?" Write down what God has revealed about Himself, humanity, and how He relates to humanity.
6. Actualize: Craft a personal action statement to apply what you have learned this week. Your statement should give specific and measurable action steps that you can do in one week.
